Workshops

ELCAF aims to celebrate the thriving community of artists we work with by making our events as inclusive as possible. Although a number of our talks are ticketed, we try to offer as much as we can for free in the hope that more of you lovely lot will be able to attend. All free talks and workshops are offered on a first come, first served basis. Spaces are limited so if you see something you like make sure you come early! Under 16's get in free.

Katie Johnston (Day Job Studio) : Shapely Stories

Come and throw some shapes in this collage and ink workshop with Day Job Studio Illustrator Katie Johnston. Using a single sheet of paper, create your own zine based on a playful exploration of how shapes can generate narrative, pattern and landscape. Katie Johnston is a multi-disciplinary illustrator based between London and Berlin. Her work ranges from editorial illustration to collaborative projects that challenge the traditional role of image maker. Her research centres around play, science, place and pattern.

Nous Vous Workshop

Foyles X ELCAF present Nous Vous. Invent your own elephant guests and create your own rooms at The Elephant Hotel with Nous Vous. Nous Vous are a studio made up of artists and friends – Jay Cover, William Luz and Nicolas Burrows. They collaborate on a broad range of projects, from illustration & graphic design commissions to exhibitions, curatorial work, publishing and teaching. The Elephant Hotel, a book by Nicolas Burrows, is the winning entry and result of the ELCAF Award 2016, which enables artists to realise their creative vision through a grant which supports and transforms an idea into a printed publication.

CENTRAL VAPEUR: POSTER MAKING

June 16 / 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Come and create your own poster with illustrators from Central Vapeur as they run a screen printing and painting workshop for ELCAF. Using shapes and forms printed in colour, and adding simple black line details with a paintbrush, contribute to an ever growing gallery of real or imagined portraits. Central Vapeur is a collective of practising illustrators and publishing collectives who also promote illustration and the graphic arts in the East of France. Their 2018 festival in Strasbourg will be held in partnership with AOI.

NICK WHITE: THE POWER OF THE DOODLE

June 16 / 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Join artist, illustrator, lecturer and full time doodler Nick White, and re-discover the power and joy of doodling. Through a series of quick doodle games, learn how to loosen up, to embrace mistakes and to explore new ways of generating ideas, characters and stories. You’ll also get to draw a ‘porcupine in love with a balloon’ – who wouldn’t want to do that?!

LOUGHBOROUGH/EPINAL: FAKE NEWS

June 16 / 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm

Loughborough University and Haute École des Arts du Rhin (France) run a workshop aimed at activists, would-be-activists, get-off-your-ass-and-activate-activists and anyone else agitated by the phrase ‘Fake News’. With the need to reclaim the ground of reliable and accountable news sources, create your own visual narrative using illustrated leporello covers, explore what this phrase really means and combine forces to create a large semi-narrative mural.

AKVILE MAGICDUST: CHARACTERS FROM MAGIC FOUND OBJECTS

June 16 / 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm

Let your imagination run wild and start seeing things as characters together with illustrator and comic artist Akvile Magicdust. Create your own character from simple objects found at home, in the street or within a forest. Akvile Magicdust is based in Vilnius, and creates tropical and surreal dreamscapes complete with fairytale panthers and bats that can skateboard.

Recommended participant age: 5 – 16, but anyone older also welcome!

EXPLORING SENSES: TALKING PICTURES AND TOY HACKING

June 17 / 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Exploring Senses join us once again for ELCAF 2017, but this time with two exciting workshops that will take over one of our spaces throughout the day. In the first workshop (Talking Pictures), make and record your own electronic sounds, and design and illustrate interactive conductive ink artworks to trigger them with. Take part in Toy Hacking with a twist during the second workshop, with 3d pens on hand to help you put together some impressive creations.

Exploring Senses will be taking over the Workshop Marquee all day. Please note timings for the specific workshop sessions: 12.00 – 14.00 and 15.00 – 17.00




BROLLY LOLLY: THE PUPPET JUNGLE

June 17 / 12:15 pm - 1:45 pm

Join illustration collective Brolly Lolly to populate a paper jungle with the wildest and most colourful birds and beasts you can imagine. You’ll be creating simple, moveable puppets to roar, pounce, screech and leap from treetop to treetop in their jungle theatre.

This activity is most suitable for those age 5 and above, but everyone is welcome!

ANOUK BOISROBERT AND LOUIS RIGAUD: POP-UP

June 17 / 12:15 pm - 1:45 pm

Join french illustration, author, design and animation duo Anouck Boisrobert and Louis Rigaud in a workshop where they demonstrate how to create a pop-up book. Join in and make your own pop-up card and scene using illustrations cut from paper.

ALBERTINE AND GERMANO ZULLO: BUILD THE FUTURE!

June 17 / 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

Join children’s book illustrator Albertine Zullo and author Germano Zullo in a fun drawing workshop based on their 2012 book Sky High. Learn how to draw a building that is architecturally bold and with utopian functions to match! As in the book, these functions will be briefly detailed and will help provide a narrative basis for the drawing.

IT’S RAINING ELEPHANTS: MARTA & ME

June 17 / 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

Marta likes drawing and making stuff. One day she takes a huge piece of paper – five times her size! – and starts painting. She uses a lot of yellow, paints a wild mane, a snout and a moustache.. and yes, it’s a lion! He steps out of the paper and comes to life. Swiss illustration duo It’s Raining Elephants will run a workshop based on the lovely story of Marta & Me.

CAMBERWELL COLLEGE OF ART: RISE OF THE MACHINES

June 17 / 3:45 pm - 5:15 pm

Explore the fun and playfulness of developing a fictional character by joining students from Camberwell College of Art’s illustration course in a three dimensional workshop challenging you to build, make and decorate your own free-standing robotic character using pre-cut slotted components, drawings and collage.

MARION BATAILLE: AOZ

June 17 / 3:45 pm - 5:15 pm

Join graphic artist and illustrator Marion Bataille in a workshop that challenges you to write your name through shape and form. Build letters using paper shapes, scissors and glue and pull it all together in beautiful leporello form.

LEEDS: SCRAP STORIES

June 17 / 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

Join students and illustrators Meg Ojari and Kieran Blakey from Leeds College of Art for a workshop based on recycling and self briefing. Reuse, recycle and recreate with collage and found text and make your own unique and personal handmade book with narrative to take home.

GLASGOW SCHOOL OF ART: THINGS YOU CAN TAKEAWAY

June 17 / 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

Turn a pizza box into a vessel for your memories with Glasgow School of Art’s fun, tongue in cheek workshop. Inspired by associating memories with objects, create your own stories and panels based on your own experiences and gradually add to a massive pile of discarded pizza boxes.

CICADA BOOKS AND ELEONORA MARTON: ABC DOOR SIGN!

June 18 / 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Make a personalised hanging door sign using artist and illustrator Eleonora Marton’s unique combination of colour and collage (author of DIY ABC, published by Cicada Books in 2016). Collage your name on one side of the door sign and use the reverse to draw or collage things that you love, that begin with each letter of your name.

TOWER BLOCK BOOKS: TYPE FACES

June 18 / 2:15 pm - 4:15 pm

Join small press publishers Tower Block Books in creating a wearable alphabet! Using paint and cardboard, transform your body into a giant letter, and create lots of different messages together – can you read us?

OTTO PRESS AND LITTLE ARTS FORMS: ABSTRACT COMICS

June 18 / 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm

Join artist and art therapist Grace Thompson (creator of Little Art Forms) and cartoonist and designer Peter Cline (owner of Otto Press) in creating artwork within your own unique sketchbook that you’ll receive at the beginning of the workshop. The sketchbook has been pre-printed with templates allowing you to adapt and interact, or just to spark off some ideas. Have a look at examples of other publications and abstract comics, and take your creation home with you to continue as an ongoing project.
